Case Study: Bob & Maxine Anderson
Private Residence, Te Anau
Bob and Maxine Anderson had bad experiences with timber warping & twisting on two buildings they owned in Te Anau, so they wanted a better solution for their own home. Frametek steel framing provided a cost effective and reliable option for their building needs.
“I feel certain the steel framing will be a major advantage when we come to sell our property,” says Bob. “Topical issues with leaky homes & rotten framing just do not exist with steel framing.”
Anderson also believes that steel framing is very competitive with timber from a cost perspective.
“The essential issues to note here is that the steel framing quote includes all structural fixings, ceiling battens, & wall bracing elements. Plus there never will be a requirement to straighten any walls before lining,” explains Bob.
A significant factor that influenced the Andersons decision on materials was the fact that steel frames & trusses are much lighter than their equivalents in timber. The lighter weight in turn minimises labour costs and reduces risk of injury in working with the material.
Bob says the weight difference between the materials was highlighted during the build of their home, as they used steel for the framing, but timber for the verandas.
“After being totally spoiled with the light steel framing, we had to heave large baulks of wet timber around for the verandas. At one stage the scaffolding rolled back and it was just luck that there was no-one injured,” says Bob.
Bob encourages builders to have an open mind and to consider working with steel framing over traditional timber.
“Traditional Builders need to move with the times and offer steel framing as a real option to timber.”
